Batman V Superman producer on its “unkind press”

Deborah Snyder has been chatting about the media response to certain films – and how some reviewers seem to make things personal. With promotion ramping up for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the four hour version of the 2017 superhero film that’s landing next year, producer Deborah Snyder has been doing some interview work. She appeared on the LightCast podcast, and she’s been chatting there about the press response to 2016’s Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice. “We’ve had our share of unkind press”, she says, citing Batman V Superman as a good example. “’It’s too dark’. Too dark compared to what? I think that some of the reactions were ‘it’s not funny enough. It’s not the movie I expected it to be’” and she questions “is that the movie’s fault or is that your fault for having a preconceived notion of what it should be?”, adding that “it was kind of interesting to read things like that”. She also argues, not unreasonably, the people go with negative headlines because they tend to get more response. And that the story behind a negative headline “isn’t as salacious”. She argues that “sometimes I feel, not just about our movies, but in general, the reviewers are cruel, and there’s people behind it that spend a lot of time whether you like it or not. And you don’t have to like it, but sometimes it gets very personal, and it gets mean. You can say what you think about it without being mean or cruel”. I think it’s pretty hard to argue with the last point really, and don’t think she’s wrong about the angle taken by some outlets. If you don’t like the film, fair enough. But you don’t have to be a dick about it.
