Barbarian’s Zach Cregger to produce Companion for New Line

New Line looks all set to follow the Peele and Wan playbook, with Zach Cregger set to produce and direct projects for the studio. Just last week it was revealed that Zach Cregger had signed a very handsome deal with New Line Cinema to make his next film, Weapons. The director certainly made a splash last year with Barbarian, announcing himself as a bold new name in horror and New Line (as part of Warner Bros) moved quickly to secure his services following the departure of James Wan to Universal. As with Wan and Jordan Peele, it looks like Cregger will be afforded the opportunity to push through projects at a production level too. Both Wan and Peele have shepherded plenty of successful horror flicks through the studio system as producers and New Line seems keen to utilise Cregger in a similar fashion with the announcement of Companion.  According to The Wrap, the film will mark the directorial feature debut of Drew Hancock but was co-penned by Cregger along with his fellow Barbarian producers, Roy Lee, Raphael Margules. Not a lot is known about the project yet apart from that it will be a horror thriller and it is being fast-tracked for production this year, alongside Weapons. As for the latter, a few details have emerged regarding Weapons but these are unconfirmed so take them with a pinch of salt. According to World of Reel, the film will revolve around ‘witchcraft and missing children and will be told via multi and inter-related stories.’ The screenplay is also said to be pretty hefty and could result in a three hour film. Blimey, if that all is true it sounds like Cregger is using the success of Barbarian to make a Paul Thomas Anderson move, and who can blame him? He may never find himself in such a strong position with a studio again so a bold swing could well be his aim.
