Editing, in terms of cutting films to a manageable length, seems to be a fading art. Gone are the days of the 90 minute blockbuster. In fact, at times it feels like gone are the days of the two hour blockbuster.
This brings us, then, to James Cameron’s long awaited follow up to
Avatar –
Avatar: The Way Of Water. While no official running time has been confirmed by the studio, the rating system in the US means we now have a rough estimate of the running time. The film will apparently clock in at a buttock numbing three hours and ten minutes, beating the original’s running time by a whopping half an hour.
Cameron is no stranger to epic films, with
Titanic coming in even longer at three hours and fifteen minutes.
Of course, the debate always goes that no good film is too long and no bad film is too short. While this is true, there is an interesting argument to be had about films giving the same value for money when the likes of Netflix offer hours worth of series with filmic budgets to match. The trend isn’t likely to stop any time soon, with sources claiming that Damien Chazelle’s
Babylon will run for at least three hours, while Marvel’s
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is two hours and 41 minutes.
The plot of
Avatar: The Way Of Water will pick up over a decade after the original, with Jake Sully and Ney’tiri having formed a family. However, when an ancient threat resurfaces they must leave their home to explore the regions of Pandora, while Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans.
Avatar: The Way Of Water will be released in the UK on 16
th December.
