James Cameron admits that four Avatar sequels is on the risky side, calling the project ā€œa big roll of the diceā€. Believe it or not – and generally, we go with ‘not’ when it comes to this question – we’re a year away now from the first of James Cameron’s four sequels to 2009’s Avatar. The delays to the films are nearly in double figures, but a year today, out comes Avatar 2. Will the audience return though? Does Avatar still have the level of interest that sprung the first film – off the back of the 3D boom – to become the biggest movie of all time at the box office? Well, James Cameron certainly hears the doubts, and seems to have plenty of them himself. In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, he admits that “it sounds kind of nuts, the process. I mean, if Avatar hadn’t made so much damn money, we’d never do this – because it’s kind of crazy”. And then he addressed the elephant in the room: “The big issue is: Are we going to make any damn money? Big, expensive films have got to make a lot of money. We’re in a new world post-COVID, post-streaming”. He concedes that the box office number of old will maybe “never be seen again. Who knows? It’s all a big roll of the dice”. We’re a year away from finding out.
