The celebrated documentarian Asif Kapadia is about to switch things up with 2073, a blurring of the lines between documentary and dystopian thriller.
Asif Kapadia is surely one of the most respected documentary filmmakers working today. Kapadiaās trilogy of films documenting the lives of Ayrton Senna, Amy Winehouse and Diego Maradona have earned him all sorts of plaudits and awards, and rightly so too.
However, for his next project it seems that Kapadia is angling in a different direction, looking to fuse his trademark documentary style with a more dramatic, fictionalised approach.
2073 will be Kapadiaās next project and it has been described as tackling the āchallenges the world faces and is inspired by Chris Marker’s iconic 1962 featurette
La Jetée, about a time traveler who risks his life to change the course of history and save the future of humanity.ā
La Jetée, incidentally, was the short film that
Twelve Monkeys is based on.
Itās definitely a step in a new direction for the filmmaker and having crafted an exquisite series of films thus far that explore similar themes in a similar style, its laudable that heās looking to take on a different creative challenge. Neon, Film4 and Double Agent are all co-financing and Kapadia has briefly spoken about the project, stating: ā“I want to make an epic about the state of the world, using elements of science fiction as a lens through which to examine the huge questions we are facing as a species and hopefully find solutions, before it’s too late.ā
Those are some lofty goals and itās safe to say that weāll be keenly watching to see how this project develops. No release date or production date has been announced as of yet, but weāll let you know as we hear more.
