Word has reached the Film Stories news desk that Max’s Arkham Asylum TV show is no longer happening at DC Studios.
The project has been in the works for several years and many showrunners, including Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter, have tried to crack it, but it seems that we’ve reached the end of the road, at least for this adaptation.
The show was originally supposed to take place within Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe and focus on the Gotham Police Department, but the idea was abandoned in favour of a plot that focused on the Arkham Asylum, a hospital for the criminally insane. Reeves was attached as an executive producer for the show, too.
Unlike The Penguin which will be firmly in The Batman universe, it was ultimately decided in 2022 that Arkham Asylum would take place in the larger DC Universe. The Staircase showrunner Antony Campos was the latest showrunner taking a stab at it, but things clearly didn’t work out, as reported by Variety.
However, the door is still open for another Arkham Asylum adaptation to happen. An anonymous source told Variety that the studio is open to developing another version set in the infamous hospital.
Things are looking very busy at DC Studios currently. Reeves is currently working on The Batman Part II while James Gunn is filming Superman. The Penguin is also arriving on our screens later this year.
