Martin Scorsese’s next film is going to cost even more money than The Irishman to make – and Apple, rather than Netflix, will be footing the bill.
For the second movie in a row, Martin Scorsese is set to embark on the making of his most expensive film ever. After Netflix came in to fund The Irishman, when traditional movie studios balked at the idea of spending over $150m on a near-four hour film, his next production is Killers Of The Flower Moon.
This one is set to star Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, and the 1920s-set movie – based on the book by David Grann – was originally set up at Paramount Pictures.
But the price started to go north. To the point where the current estimated budget needed is said to be around $225m. Beyond the spending power of a traditional studio, at least for a non-franchise film.
It had been speculated that Netflix would thus get its chequebook out again for the film. But instead, it’s Apple – more and more trying to grow its movie business and Apple+ service – that’s stumping up. It’ll be doing so in conjunction with Paramount.
This suggests that, unlike The Irishman, Killers Of The Flower Moon will also get a proper theatrical release, although that’s not been confirmed at this time.
As we hear more about the project, we’ll let you know. But it looks like it’s full steam ahead for now.
