Anthony Hopkins is the latest to sign up to Zack Snyder’s two-part science fiction movie saga over at Netflix.
After years of battles with Warner Bros over the creative direction of the DC Extended Universe of films, Zack Snyder seems to have found a happy home at Netflix following the positive experience of making the film
Army Of The Dead. His next project,
Rebel Moon, is said two be an epic two-part ode to
Star Wars movies and Kurosawa flicks. Whilst those might be weighty influences to invoke, Snyder seems to be comfortable holding his project up to that level of comparison and we can only admire his ambition.
Casting for the film came together a while ago with Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Djimon Hounsou, Bae Doona and Ray Fisher set to form the ensemble for the two-part sci-fi fantasy feature. However, the project has bagged itself quite the name to add to the film’s star power in the form of none other than Anthony Hopkins. Reportedly, the veteran actor will ‘voice Jimmy, an impossibly sentient JC1435 mechanised battle robot and one-time defender of the slain King.’ You can check out the character’s rather cool appearance below.
The film promises to be a sci-fi adventure where ‘the story is set in motion when a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius. Desperate people dispatch a young woman with a mysterious past to seek out warriors from neighbouring planets to help them make a stand.’ Snyder also released a short make-up test on Twitter too, which you can see below.
Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E Duffy, Charlotte Maggi and Sky Yang will also feature.
With
Star Wars movies seemingly dormant these days, it would certainly be a real win for both Snyder and Netflix if the film launches to a measure of success, especially if it appears at the year’s end, traditionally the time for a
Star Wars release in recent times. The film is set to remain in production until November, meaning we can expect to see it some time around late 2023.
Whether
yesterday’s news about Apple giving its blockbuster Brad Pitt racing film a major theatrical release will catch Netflix’s eye remains to be seen, but with no
Star Wars movies in sight, the potential is surely there for
Rebel Moon to release in cinemas and gobble up masses of box-office dollars. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
