Following tepid reviews, Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania now faces a swift loss of audience interest.
Projections have the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe entry,
Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania, in line to break records, but not the kind that Marvel is looking for. As the film battles through poor reviews, audiences seem to be reappraising their interest in the film too, with projections stating that the film is facing the worst second-weekend box office decline in the history of MCU films, losing nearly 70% of its business. Superhero fatigue is real, it seems and audiences who might once have been tempted to go and see a poorly-reviewed Marvel movie to keep up with the wider MCU plot, look to have changed their minds. The report suggests that perhaps for the first time, poor reviews alongside poor word of mouth are genuinely hurting the film. This will no doubt be of great concern to the high-ups at Disney who have relied on the MCU in the past to generate stackloads of cash whilst the company rebalances rockier areas of its portfolio, such as the money-swallowing hole that is Disney+.
The point here is that although this is just one projection regarding one film’s performance, the ramifications could be much, much wider. Marvel Studios is reaching the point where it desperately needs an older-scale win as the wider narrative around the MCU and superhero films is not painting a pretty picture for their continued dominance at the box office.
