A new take on Bewitched is coming, but this time the film will take its cues directly from the original 1960s TV sitcom.
Reports have emerged that we’ll be getting another reimagining of Bewitched, the classic 1960s American sitcom featuring a witch hiding in the domestic perfection of suburban Americana. The show, which recently was the subject of an episode-long homage in marvel’s WandaVision, has been adapted for the big screen before.
The previous attempt to adapt Bewitched for cinema came in the guise of the 2005 romantic comedy, starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell, which sought to add a meta-textual layer onto proceedings and was received poorly. This time, we’ve been assured, the film will hew closer to the original series where Samantha the witch tries not to use her power as part of her everyday, ‘ordinary’ life.
Sony is behind the project, and although no casting has been announced as of yet, the writing team working on the film features Terry Matalas and Travis Fickett. Their past credits include being showrunners on the MacGyver and 12 Monkeys series. We’ll bring you more news on this one as we hear it.
