A promising trio has been assembled for FilmNation comedy The Invite, directed by the Little Miss Sunshine helmers.
The co-directors of Little Miss Sunshine have put together a promising lead ensemble for their upcoming comedy, The Invite. Whether it’s their 2006 indie classic, or the duo’s more recent Netflix dramedy series, Living With Yourself (which starred Paul Rudd), Dayton and Faris are great at drawing humour and emotional depth from dramas staged around relationships between humans that are in need of some work.
It looks like the duo are returning to the same well once again with The Invite, a comedy that looks set to explore the staleness that can creep into relationships over time.
The film ‘tells the story of Joe (Rudd) and Angela (Adams), who after 15 years of marriage, find that their relationship is in a rut. Desperate to have a conversation that isn’t focused on their marital woes, Angela invites their boisterous neighbours, Kayla (Thompson) and Shane, over for cocktails. Joe, irritated at having to engage with this disruptive couple, plans to use the occasion to confront them; however, both he and Angela get far more than they bargained for as sparks fly and they discover Shane and Kayla are hosting weekly orgies and have an invite of their own to offer.’
Sounds fun, doesn’t it?
Amy Adams in particular is queueing up a string of interesting projects at the moment, including a turn in Marielle Heller’s Nightbitch and appearing in the starry ensemble for Adam McKay’s next film, Average Height, Average Build.
We’re hoping that the green-lit script for The Invite pushes the premise into creatively risky territory. After all, Little Miss Sunshine remains a beloved film by many for aspiring for true indie credentials and being a film that (despite being picked up at Sundance by Fox Searchlight for a then-record fee) it wasn’t moulded at the whim of studio executives. Hopefully, The Invite will see Dayton and Faris enjoying the same sense of creative liberation. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
