The acting legend Al Pacino has revealed he has at least four more films lined up before he calls it quits.
Al Pacino has revealed that he is looking to take on the role of King Lear, with production set to begin on the Shakespeare adaptation at some point next year. In a fun and revealing interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Pacino held court over a number of subjects, including that he has four more film projects on his slate before he potentially calls it quits.
Whilst he doesn’t name the others, Pacino does reveal that a Lear adaptation is on the cards, a move that would see him return to the works of William Shakespeare. Pacino memorably played King Richard in the 1990s hybrid documentary drama which also served as the actor’s directorial debut. We have to admit, we’d be very intrigued to see what he could do with Lear, one of Shakespeare’s tragic protagonists who has been portrayed many times, most recently by Anthony Hopkins in a 2018 TV movie produced by Amazon.
Pacino speaks about retirement in the interview, stating that: “I’m always retired. I was retired when I was 25. I mean, who cares? Please don’t call it retired, I just don’t want to work anymore.”
Despite that claim, Pacino revealed that he is still tempted by the allure of new projects, adding: “I like the lead-up to it, you know what I mean? It’s sort of like foreplay or something. I like to get there and then see, ‘Will I make it? Will I not make it? That kind of thing. I don’t know anymore. I wake up in the morning, I sit at the edge of the bed like this. And I think, ‘Is it really possible that I’m gonna get through this day?’ And then I think, ‘But I did say that yesterday, and I said it the day before and the day before that, and I got through it.’ I said that this morning, ladies and gentlemen, and you’re seeing him today!”
