The animated sequel to The Addams Family ā The Addams Family 2 ā looks like the latest film to hedge its bets when it comes to cinemas.
MGM and Annapurnaās upcoming animated sequel,
The Addams Family 2 will be releasing in cinemas but also at the same time on video on demand, it has been announced.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, weāve seen animated films in particular find their way quickly onto the small screen, whether it be Pixarās
Luca going straight to Disney+,
Raya & the Last Dragon heading to Premier Access on the same platform, or traditional studios like Sony selling animated features such as
The Mitchells Vs The Machines to streaming platforms like Netflix. All rather than risking them with a theatrical run.
Whilst MGM and Annapurna donāt have their own streaming platforms, and clearly donāt want to sell the film in whole to a streaming service, they also seem keen to use a digital release to safeguard the filmās profits. As such, a rental release using other platforms such as Amazon Prime Video seems likely. Of course, this will no doubt affect the filmās overall gross as families can can not only enjoy the film from the comfort of their own home, but also pay the price of one access fee rather than several cinema tickets.
However, if MGM and Annapurna are worried that the resurgence of Covid, via the Delta variant, could completely sink the filmās box-office run, then this appears to be a satisfactory middle ground. No plans have been announced for the UK release yet, which is currently set for the 8th October, but weāll let you know when details are confirmed.
