The indie studio A24 will partner with James Wan and Shawn Levy’s production companies to bring The Backrooms to the screen.
The Backrooms phenomenon is the latest viral success in the homebrew horror genre, as filmmakers build on an urban legend to create hugely popular DIY horror films. Much like the ‘Slender Man’ phenomenon before it,
Backrooms has proved to be a creative catalyst for lots of creative minds and A24, always creative in its approach to putting fresh ideas up on cinema screens, has elected to take the idea and adapt it into a feature film.
The company has signed a deal with YouTube filmmaker, Kane Parsons, a 17-year old filmmaker and VFX artist whose series of online
Backrooms films have amassed nearly 100 million views. Parsons will be getting to team up with some experienced producers in the form of James Wan and Shawn Levy, with A24 partnering with both production companies to bring
The Backrooms to life.
There’s no word on a production date yet, but Parsons’ film series begins with a ‘1990s-set original short featuring a young filmmaker who falls into another dimension that leaves him wandering through a very yellow, empty and labyrinthine office space which appears to be home to otherworldly monsters who pursue him though the endless corridors, offices, car park and more.’
