A24 announces release date for pro-wrestling drama The Iron Claw

A24 is showing confidence in The Iron Claw, announcing a release date that ignores the uncertainty caused by the ongoing strikes. The Iron Claw is a project that’s been firmly on our radar for some time now. We’ve long harboured high hopes for director Sean Durkin’s follow up to The Nest. That film was a rich drama, showing off Durkin’s skill for effective character study. The Iron Claw will almost certainly allow Durkin to effectively work that angle again, being a ‘gritty and transformative’ wrestling drama that follows the Von Erichs, a legendary family in the pro-wrestling world who have been beset by tragedy. We’re liking the cast that has been assembled too. The film will star Zac Efron, Lily James and Maura Tierney. Harris Dickinson, Holt McCallany and Jeremy Allen White have all had appearances announced, too.
A24 is backing the project, along with Access Entertainment and BBC Films. It’s been announced that the film is heading to cinemas on December 22nd. There’s been a little bit of chatter for a while now that A24 could benefit from the ongoing strike action. How? If larger studios do start pulling films from the schedule, that creates less competition for the mini studio who have already established a successful marketing formula that doesn’t rely too much on movie stars appearing on red carpets or late night talk shows. Also, as a truly independent studio, A24 has also been granted an exemption by SAG-AFTRA, meaning that the brace of films it currently has in production can continue to film throughout the strike. As such, A24 has decided that The Iron Claw will hit cinemas on December 22nd, strike or no. The film will certainly offer a tempting counter-programming choice for those seeking shelter from Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom, and the studio are well-versed at mobilising their fans to get them into cinemas, even in the shadow of a giant blockbuster like the DC movie.
