The indie studio behind the likes of Moonlight and Midsommer has been exploring a possible sale, it’s been revealed.
The independent American production company A24 has, over its nine years of existence, been responsible for some pretty stunning features. Amongst the dozens of films that it’s backed have been
Minari,
Saint Maud,
Moonlight,
Uncut Gems,
Midsommar,
Eighth Grade,
A Ghost Story,
The Florida Project,
The Witch,
Ex Machina and
Room. That’s just a taste of its extensive filmography. A regular on the awards nominations list, it’s also scored a fair few commercial hits too.
Now comes the report though that the indie has been at the very least exploring a possible sale, perhaps buoyed by an era where Amazon, Apple et al are paying very heavy sums to get more footing in the film industry.
A price of around $2.5bn to $3bn
has been reported in the Hollywood trade press, and apparently talks have been happening for over 18 months. The fact that nothing has seemingly come to pass – for the moment at least – suggests that it’s not top priority to sell the firm, and that’s the message coming out of A24. But still: if someone is coming along and ultimately offering sums of that ilk, it’s not surprising that heads are being turned.
We wait and see what happens next. There’s a feeling at the moment that the price may be too high even for the likes of Apple, but in the current climate, who really knows?
