There’s more mind bending sci-fi in our future as Netflix orders more episodes of their popular series, 3 Body Problem.
Variety reports that Netflix has renewed 3 Body Problem, the ambitious sci-fi series from Game Of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, for “additional episodes”. The streamer isn’t calling this a season 2, but it seems to be giving Benioff, Wise and their co-creator Alexander Woo a chance to tie up loose ends.
The creators previously said that they’d need “at least three, maybe four seasons” to finish the story off. According to Variety’s reporting of the press releases, the exact number of episodes and seasons will be announced later.
“We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion,” the creators said in the press release. “Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us. Here we go!”
3 Body Problem is based on Liu Cixin’s series of novels which find a young woman’s actions in 1960s China reverberate across time and space to modern day, where a group of scientists grapple with a unique threat.
The series spent a decent amount of time in Netflix’s Top 10 list, but critics gave the series middling reviews. In our review of the first three episodes, we noted that the series, despite a handsome budget of $160m, looked pretty terrible and the sets seemed conspicuously empty.
“Instead, the world of 3 Body Problem just doesn’t feel lived-in. In any other story this might be annoying, but manageable. But for a show that already requires the audience to buy into a high-concept premise, that lack of believability could be a death sentence,” James Harvey wrote at the time of the series’ release in March.
