Even with The Batman still eating up box office money, a staggering 18 films are launching in the UK at the end of the week.
Well, if you wanted any proof that the cinema exhibition industry has got its confidence back, let this be it. After a light week or two of releases following Warner Bros’ unveiling of box office giant The Batman – and who wanted to be caught in the slipstream of that? – a staggering 18 movies are getting a release in UK cinemas this coming weekend.
This is the highest number for a single week since, well, you know what, and whilst it wasn’t uncommon to see so many releases at once a few years back, this still seems a particularly high amount.
The 18 new films you’ve got to choose from? Well, the widest releases go to The Nan Movie (which doesn’t appear to be being screened for critics), Ti West’s X, and the lovely The Phantom Of The Open.
Then there’s a whole host of indie fare. Awards contenders Paris, 13th District and the acclaimed Hive lead the charge. Then there’s Olga (getting one day only screenings), Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Europa, Master (starring Regina Hall), Bachchan Pandey, Love After Love (that goes to video on demand too), River, Long Live My Happy Head, Rebellion, Followers, Three Floors, My Country My Parents and Not Going Quietly.
The majority of those are getting very limited releases, and next week too sees a further 11 titles heading our way. March is a useful window where awards ceremonies raise the profile of movies, and also there’s some space before the blockbusters arrive. Still, bit competitive this year. Hopefully there’s space for the majority of them to get what they need: every one of these movies has taken a good year or two at least to get this far, after all…
