Following Artemis Fowl, Disney announces that The One And Only Ivan won’t be making it to cinemas, and is going straight to Disney+ too.
Over the weekend, Disney released its long-in-gestation big screen take on Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl on its Disney+ streaming service. The movie had been planned for cinemas, but their temporary closure and the need for new material on the streaming platform meant a change in release plans.
The response to the film, in truth, hasn’t been great (we can’t say we were too keen ourselves), but we fully expect the viewing numbers to be sky high. And Disney is perhaps understandably now looking at other movies it had planned for the big screen to give them a Disney+ premiere.
Step forward then The One And Only Ivan, an adaptation of the bestselling book by Katherine Applegate, that had been planned for theatrical release later this year.
Disney has now announced that the film will debut on Disney+ from August 21st around the world. It’s directed by Thea Sharrock, and features the voices of Angelina Jolie, Som Rockwell, Helen Mirren and Danny DeVito, with Bryan Cranston in the ensemble too.
The synopsis reads:
Ivan is a 400-pound silverback gorilla who shares a communal habitat in a suburban shopping mall with Stella the elephant and Bob the dog. He has few memories of the jungle where he was captured, but when a baby elephant named Ruby arrives, it touches something deep within him. Ruby is recently separated from her family in the wild, which causes him to question his life, where he comes from and where he ultimately wants to be.
Expect a new trailer in due course. And expect more theatrical movies to find their way to Disney+ too…
