Disney boss Bob Chapek defends the upcoming Disney+ price increase – and hints there’s headroom too for more price rises.
Later this year, Disney+ is the latest streamer to be putting its prices up. Whilst we’ve not had the UK confirmation of the incoming hikes, in the US Disney will be raising the monthly subscription from $7.99 a month to $10.99 a month. Or, you can keep paying your current price there, but you have to watch adverts as part of the package too.
Disney’s CEO, Bob Chapek, has been out defending the upcoming price rises, chatting at – wouldn’t you know it – a Goldman Sachs conference. He argued that the launch price for Disney+ of $6.99 a month in the US was “pretty absurd”, and added that “I think we’re way underpriced relative to the value we provide”.
That may not be the end of it either. In one of those lovely consumer-friendly phrase, Chapek added that the film “believe our churn implications of taking up the price … will be negligible”.
Still, Disney+ continues to add subscribers, with over 200 million worldwide.
