Our weekly slot where we recommend an independent UK podcast returns, and we’re saluting the pod that in turn salutes A24.
A24 is a production company right at the top of its game. It’s now one of the most consistent, risk-taking and diverse independent entertainment companies in Hollywood, with 25 Academy Award nominations and six wins under its belt. That’s impressive for any production company, but especially so for one that was founded only eight years ago!
It was while working on their other weekly film review podcast in 2018, that hosts Dallas King and Lee Hutchison realised that some of their favourite movies of that year, Hereditary and First Reformed, were distributed by A24. They looked into its back catalogue, discovered how fantastic it was and decided to create The A24 Project: a podcast that would purely look into, dissect and discuss the film and TV projects produced and/or distributed by A24. The A24 Project joined the other proud podcast members of The Nerd Party podcast network.
Originally conceived as a review show, that changed when Lee contacted Milly Shapiro, star of Hereditary and asked if she would feature on The A24 Project which she gladly did. Since then, the podcast has been a mix of discussion, reviews and both arranged and impromptu interviews with A24 cast and crew, including the aforementioned Milly Shapiro, Bo Burnham (director of Eighth Grade) and David Lowery (director of A Ghost Story), amongst others.
Dallas and Lee are both very hands-on with the podcast, having worked together in podcasting for years. That long-standing friendship and mutual love and respect for A24’s productions, despite recording in Aberdeen and Edinburgh respectively, means episodes feel well-produced and welcoming to new and existing listeners alike. Now they are almost complete with A24’s film catalogue after 77 podcast episodes, they will be moving on to explore the television output, including acclaimed shows like Euphoria and Ramy.
Each episode of The A24 Project focuses on two A24 productions, A24-related news and occasionally features special guest hosts, talking about their love for A24. Despite all the free promotion they have given A24 over the last couple of years, Dallas and Lee still have not received any free merchandise from the A24 Shop. They are particularly interested in the free candles….
