The second ever Mega Movie Weekend launches today, with some cracking offers on the biggest horror films of the last couple of years. More belowā¦
Here at Film Stories, we ruddy love a good bargain. Film-related bargains, even more so. I once found a copy of Jerry Zuckerās Rat Race for 20p in a charity shop. Bargain!
The Mega Movie Weekend campaign, running every month until the end of the year, embraces that penny-pinching spirit with gusto. This monthās offerings, running from 20th ā 22nd October, include a bunch of the last few yearsā biggest and best horror movies to download and keep for as little as £1.99 (admittedly, thatās no Rat Race-level deal, but then weāre assuming these downloads will have fewer mysterious brown stains on the box, too). Oh, and the original Saw is also on there.
Thereās no central list of flicks that we could find, but weāve had a rummage and found five of the highest profile horror films on offer at the seven participating retailers (Amazon Prime Video, the Apple TV app, BT Store, Google TV, Rakuten TV, Sky Store and Virgin Media Store). If youāre looking for a cheap alternative to apple-bobbing in a skeleton onesie, you could do a lot worse, frankly.
Director: Lee Cronin
Starring: Lily Sullivan, Alyssa Sutherland, Morgan Davies
Price: £5.99
Proud owner of 2023ās best title sequence, the sequel/reboot of Sam Raimiās superlative goo trilogy is just as splattery as youād hope. With a wonderfully game cast and no shortage of horribly entertaining set-pieces, fans of Raimiās classics have plenty to enjoy here. Did we mention thereās lots of goo?

Director: Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett
Starring: Jenna Ortega, Melissa Barrera, Courteney Cox
Price: £7.99
In a triumph of common-sense nomenclature, Paramount went back to a numerical system for the follow-up to the confusingly titled Scream. Weāre still angry about that, actually. We donāt want to call it Scream (2022) for time immemorial. Edge Of Tomorrow changed its name about a dozen times, canāt we just change this one once?
Anyway, Scream VI has Jenna Ortega in it, and is rather a lot of fun. And, crucially, you can download it for £7.99 on Amazon. It was £13.99 yesterday. Bargain!

Director: Julius Avery
Starring: Russell Crowe
Price: £4.99
If youāre going to watch one cinematic masterpiece based loosely on the diaries of Father Amorth this Halloween, make it this one. Russell Crowe has never looked like heās enjoying himself more. He makes chirping noises at nuns. He rides a Vespa. He does an accent. What more could you ask for?

Director: Rhys Waterfield
Starring: Craig David Dowsett, Chris Cordell, Amber Doig-Thorne
Price: £2.99
A rare indie success story, this one. Whatever you say about its treatment of the AA Milne classics, its gender politics, or what it says about the importance of copyright law, it did make $5 million off a budget of a bit of string and a puddle of fake blood they found in the woods. Thereās a sequel coming, too, so weād better make sure weāre caught up.

Director: Elizabeth Banks
Starring: Margo Martindale, Ray Liotta, Keri Russell
Price: £3.99
Is this a horror film? Bears are pretty scary. Monster movies are normally horror films, but then most monster movies donāt feed their predatory beasts class-A drugs and throw them at Margo Martindale. It certainly has a horror-y vibe⦠Anyway, if you donāt like it, buy Saw instead. But you will like it. Itās called Cocaine Bear. Whatās not to love?
