Nicholas Hoult has been chatting about losing out on The Batman as Robert Pattinson took on the role. Read his comments below.
Nicholas Hoult is having a busy year. The actor is currently in cinemas – although for a very limited time – with Clint Eastwood’s Juror #2 and he’s about to start the press tour for Robert Eggers’ hotly anticipated Nosferatu. Hoult has also been filming James Gunn’s Superman in which he’ll be playing Lex Luthor, which is due in cinemas next year, but there is a DC Comics role he missed out on.
Hoult appeared on the Happy Sad Confused Podcast (via The Hollywood Reporter here) to chat about losing out on Matt Reeves’ The Batman and the emotional toll it took on him.
“Matt is a fantastic director and the script and everything. I was like, this is going to be a cool movie and I want to be a part of it, and a brilliant character. There’s a weird period before you can get to the acceptance and see the movie and be like that was the right choice, you go through the period of ‘what could I have done different? Why not me?’ You run through all those things,” Hoult told host Josh Horowitz.
Hoult also said the whole audition process for a big blockbuster movie is “a lot to put yourself through emotionally.”
The actor also remembers hearing about Pattinson’s casting news on the radio despite the fact that he had an audition booked in for the following weekend.
“I remember a week before we did the Batman test, I was driving in my car and I had the radio on and they were talking on the radio about how Rob was going to be the new Batman,” the actor reminisced. “And I was like, ‘It’s not confirmed yet! I’m auditioning next weekend. I was like, give me a chance.’”
Hoult might have missed out on Batman, but he’s certainly doing very well for himself with Nosferatu gathering excellent early reactions and Juror #2 doing surprisingly well despite Warner Bros.’ best attempts to bury the movie.
