An Uncharted 2 film sequel script has been written, Mark Wahlberg says, while also offering an important update on his moustache.
Sony’s Uncharted didn’t quite break the magical $500m mark that Hollywood accountants like so much, but the 2022 film (based on the hit videogame series of the same name) still did well enough to warrant talk of a sequel.
In an interview with The Direct, Mark Wahlberg – who co-starred as Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan alongside Tom Holland’s Nathan ‘Nate’ Drake in the first film – has offered an update on that potential follow-up. “I’ve heard lots of ideas,” Wahlberg said, adding, “I know somebody’s written a script.”
More crucially, though, Wahlberg spent some time talking about moustaches. In the 2022 Uncharted, Wahlberg played a seemingly younger version of the Sully we saw in the games – and the character’s Tom Selleck-like moustache was largely absent. In a post-credits scene, however, Wahlberg’s Sully is briefly shown with a bit of facial hair sprouting from his top lip – thus bringing him somewhat closer to the look of his digital counterpart in the games.
In the same interview linked above, Wahlberg revealed that the moustache would be returning in the sequel, if it happens, and that the script “would consist of having the moustache the whole time.”
“Which completely makes sense,” he added; “obviously, in that final scene [in the first Uncharted film], I have the moustache.”
Wahlberg also talked about the process of growing a moustache for the first film’s post credits scene, and how there were initial attempts to stick a fake bit of facial hair on his face for the scene, but it “just feels like there’s a big piece of tape over my mouth, and I feel ridiculous.”
Ever the committed actor, Wahlberg therefore went the extra mile and grew a proper moustache. “When I finally got the moustache,” he told The Direct, “people really appreciated it.”
As for Uncharted 2, Wahlberg said he’d be “open” to making it: “If we can make it better than the first,” he said, “I’d be open to it.”
