Christopher Nolan has taken a tongue-in-cheek prod at streaming services, as he readies Oppenheimer for Blu-ray.
It sounds like it was a playful Christopher Nolan who got chatting following an event for his megahit Oppenheimer in Los Angeles earlier this week.
On the eve of the film arriving on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray – you can find the listing here – Nolan has been talking about the care that’s gone into the physical media release of the film.
As captured by Variety, Nolan talked about how a lot of time was spent making sure the sound mix in particular of the film warranted a lot of attention. On the Blu-ray, it’s just as Nolan wanted it, and in his words, “it preserves the film’s soundscape, which is one reason moviegoers should buy a physical copy as opposed to waiting for the movie to stream”.
He added a little later that they were “trying to translate the photography and the sound, putting that into the digital realm with a version you can buy and own at home and put on a shelf so no evil streaming service can come steal it from you”.
His tongue, by the sounds of it, was a little in his cheek there. After all, the film’s been backed by Universal, which will eventually offer it via the Peacock service that it owns.
But still, no complaints here hearing a filmmaking banging the drum for physical media. Given the way streaming companies have been acting over the last year or so, they’re hardly the best stewards of cinema.
