As well as Heat 2, Michael Mann reportedly has a second project in development – a US-set remake of the 2015 Korean thriller, Veteran.
Director Michael Mann’s latest movie, the car industry biopic Ferrari, is out in cinemas in December. Meanwhile, there’s talk of what the veteran filmmaker will get up to next. A sequel to his own 1995 thriller Heat has been in development for a while, but according to Variety, Mann has a second project on the boil – a remake of the South Korean thriller, Veteran.
Released in 2015 and directed by Ryoo Seung-wan, Veteran was about a detective on the trail of an unfeasibly wealthy villain whose elite status makes him almost untouchable by the law. A thriller laced with comedy and a fair amount of action, it sounds like an unusual choice of project for Mann, though it should be pointed out that he may not direct the remake himself – according to Variety, he may eventually serve as writer and producer on the film.
It’s also reported that Mann plans to move the film’s action from South Korea to the US. This recalls Martin Scorsese and screenwriter William Monahan’s approach to The Departed – a 2006 remake of the hit Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs. Scorsese’s film moved the original film’s location from Hong Kong to Boston to Oscar-winning effect.
For now, it sounds as though Heat 2 will remain Mann’s priority. In October, the filmmaker responded to the question of whether the sequel would definitely be his next film, and his reply was a definite “Yes.”
“[Author] Meg Gardiner and myself wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out right when we were shooting Ferrari,” Mann said. “I plan to shoot that next.”
