The latest film from the legendary Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli has found UK distributors.
Hayao Miyazaki is a legendary Studio Ghibli filmmaker who at this point in his career, needs no fanfare or trumpeting as his long list of achievements speak for itself. The upcoming Studio Ghibli film The Boy And The Heron was at one point set to be his final film, although it is now being suggested that talk of Miyazaki’s retirement may have been premature.
Whilst we’re hoping that proves to be true, we’re very much looking forward to The Boy And The Heron either way and are full of admiration for its ‘less-is-more’ marketing campaign too. We’ve also been waiting patiently for news of a UK release, even as the US has had a theatrical release confirmed and audiences in Japan having seen the film released already.
Now we’re hearing via The Hollywood Reporter that Elysian Film Group, Anonymous Content and Bleecker Street have jointly acquired the UK rights and will release the film in cinemas (yay!) later this year, most likely in December when the US is set to debut the film. That’s just a guess on our part though so don’t hold us to it.
Miyazaki has bought us such classics as Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, Howl’s Moving Castle and Princess Mononoke over the years so The Boy And The Heron comes loaded with the weight of anticipation ahead of its eventual debut. In the spirit of the film’s slimmed-down marketing campaign, we’re not going to add any further details here although it did receive a brief teaser to mark its international premiere at the Toronto Film Festival last month which you can see below. Its UK premiere is set for the BFI London Film Festival next month.
