After Sky lost the broadcast rights to the Oscars earlier this year, ITV has stepped in to broadcast the awards show in the UK.
The Oscars were left without a UK home earlier this year, when it was revealed that Sky had lost the broadcast rights. However, the prestigious awards show has been saved, as ITV has inked a new multi-year deal with Disney Entertainment to broadcast the ceremony.
It’s been revealed that from next year the ceremony will be streamed live from the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and broadcast on ITV1 and ITVX. The 2024 Oscars ceremony takes place on 10th March.
The multi-year deal is promising, and the Oscars will hopefully be shown on the network for the foreseeable future. It was broadcast on Sky for a long time, as the company began airing it in 2004. The rights to the broadcast were lost after annual viewing figures declined significantly. Only 35,000 people tuned in for last year’s ceremony.
Darren Nartey, Senior Acquisitions Manager for ITV and ITVX, said “We are thrilled to be able to exclusively bring the Oscars to film fans all across the UK, furthering and complementing our commitment to films across our network. We already have a fantastic collection of over 250 feature films available on ITVX at any one time and are looking forward to sharing the movie-event of the year with our viewers.”
