Disney is upping the price of its current Disney+ packages, and introducing a new, cheaper entry level option.
Following its latest round of quarterly results, that we talked about here, Disney has now announced that prices are set to rise – and sort of fall – on its Disney+ streaming service.
The division of Disney that Disney+ sits in lost half a billion dollars in the last quarter, although that’s down from over a billion the quarter before. Now, following a raft of cost-saving initiatives, Disney is going to try and bring some more money in through the front door as well.
As such, the current £7.99 pricing tier for its Disney+ service in the UK is about to go up by £3 to £10.99 a month. Ouch.
A planned crackdown on password sharing, a la Netflix, is also looking likely.
The firm is, in fairness, offsetting the price rise by introducing some cheaper tiers.
For £4.99 a month an ad-supported subscription will be available. And, for £7.99, in comes a Standard tier that removes 4K streaming and the ability to stream on four devices at the same time. A hammer blow for people who like to watch The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen on four screens at the same time.
As such, it’s actually cheaper to become a new subscriber to Disney+, yet more expensive to retain the package that the vast majority of people have been on. Can’t work out if that’s good news or bad, so will present it to you, and go and get a coffee.
