It’s fair to say that, in cinematic terms at least, DC is having rather a hard time of it at the moment. The struggles surrounding both production and reception of The Flash have been well publicized, and the pressure really seems to be on James Gunn and Peter Safran to steer the DC Cinematic Universe to success. All as Superman: Legacy gets primed for production.
We now have details on the casting of that film, as Gunn has cast David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan as Superman and Lois Lane, respectively. Corenswet is best known for his role in the Netflix series The Politician, while Brosnahan won critical acclaim and an Emmy for her performance as the titular character in The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.
The only thing known about the plot is a vague teaser provided by Warner Bros:
Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
Gunn will write and direct the film. Gunn and Safran previously outlined their ten year plan, which will encompass multiple story arcs. Phase One is titled Gods and Monsters, and will include Superman: Legacy, Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow, Batman: Brave And The Bold, which will act as a separate entity to Robert Pattinson’s take on the Caped Crusader, Swamp Thing and The Authority, which will move Wildstorm characters into the DCU.
Superman: Legacy is due to be released on the 11th July 2025.
