Following his switch from Universal to Warner Bros earlier this year, M Night Shyamalan is set to begin production on The Trap, his next project.
Back in February, it was announced that M Night Shyamalan had ended his fruitful partnership with Universal, following a string of films that had rehabilitated his career. Indeed, 2023’s Knock At The Cabin proved to be another solid earner for Universal but nevertheless, Shyamlan decided to move on and work with Warner Bros, surely a win for the studio following a difficult couple of years where several high-profile filmmakers chose to publicly wash their hands of the company.
Shyamalan and his Blinding Edge Pictures production company signed a multi-year, first-look deal with Warner Bros, the first film in that deal being The Trap which is set to release in August of next year. As is often the case with Shyamalan’s projects we know little about this one apart from that it is now slated to shoot this summer ahead of a 2024 release.
The filmmaker has dropped a couple of hints about the project, saying “it’s a thriller. It’s very unusual and very new compared to what I’ve been trying to do [recently], but I’m feeling very excited about the story, so much so that I can’t wait to tell it to you guys. I will say this, the angle into the story is why it’s so exciting. The story might be something that you’ve seen before but the angle is very, very unique – the point of view.”
Shyamalan walks away from Universal on something of a streak. This year’s Knock At The Cabin was a really fun watch, scored good reviews and is comfortably in profit, whilst some of the other films in his recent filmography such as micro-budget, The Visit and his shared universe team-up, Glass, gave Universal very handsome returns on its end of the deal.
Some are speculating that The Trap may be a new title for an old screenplay of Shyamalan’s, a project he reportedly wrote very early in his career but never got around to making. The original title of that project was Labour Of Love and its story reportedly ‘follows a book store owner who loses the love of his life in a tragic accident.’
We’ll watch and wait to see what the filmmaker does next and with production happening imminently, casting news shouldn’t be too far away.
