A biopic about 80s band Frankie Goes To Hollywood is in the works, and will also focus on the making of hit single Relax.
The film, titled Relax, is based on A Bone In My Flute, a memoir written by the band’s lead singer Holly Johnson. It’s also set to be helmed by Bernard Rose, who directed the music video for Relax (and also 1992’s Candyman, although that’s a bit less relevant to this bit of news).
It’s A Sin's Callum Scott Howells is set to play Johnson, and more casting news is expected soon. We can likely expect a lot of the band’s music to feature in the movie as Universal Music (who hold their catalogue) are fully supporting the project.
The band is an interesting choice of topic, as they’re a prime example of censorship backfiring. Relax is now an instantly recognisable classic, but it was banned by the BBC in 1984 after reaching number six in the charts. After that, it sat at number one for five weeks in a row and stuck around in the charts throughout the year.
Working Title and Independent Entertainment are co-producing the biopic, and hope to sell to distributors at Cannes Film Festival.
