Stewart Lee and director Michael Cummings have begun development on their next film, which will be about actor and comedian Kevin Eldon.
Stewart Lee, often described as the ‘comedian’s comedian’ due to his metatextual act which simultaneously deconstructs the art of stand up whilst performing it, has now turned his attention to another film project.
Lee and director Michael Cummings previously made documentary King Rocker about Robert Lloyd, frontman for cult Birmingham bands The Prefects and The Nightingales.
They plan to team up once more on a film about the actor Kevin Eldon, also a stalwart of the alternative comedy scene as well as a regular face on an astonishing array of comedies over the last 30 years or so, from Lee and Richard Herring’s cult sketch show Fist Of Fun, to Julia Davis’ gloriously unhinged Nighty Night, as well as fronting his own sketch show It’s Kevin in 2013.
Speaking to fellow comic James Gill on the Always Be Comedy podcast, Lee said they now hope to make a film about Eldon and all the artists who have previously lived in his North London home since the early 1900s, when it “was occupied by a famous Scottish folklore writer. In 1951, it was occupied by Val Doonican, the Irish light entertainer,” Lee said. “In the eighties, by a succession of Australian punk and indie bands. And then in the noughties by Kevin Eldon. The idea is that everyone in this house was influenced in some way by Val Doonican, both in the past and the future.”
Lee and Cummings are currently trying to raise funds, which Lee says are mainly to pay for the myriad clips they would need from Eldon’s storied career. We’ll keep you updated as we hear more.
