A documentary charting Michael J Fox’s battle with Parkinson’s is coming to Apple TV+ next month – and here’s the trailer for the film.
For those of us that grew up watching Michael J Fox, (or more accurately wanting to be Michael J Fox), the actor’s decades-long battle with Parkinson’s disease continues to inspire. As a young actor in films like Back to the Future, Fox was the epitome of the cool teen movie star. In Teen Wolf he was even able to portray being a basketball-playing werewolf as an attractive proposition, making many of us wish we cursed with lycanthropy too. Who cares about turning into a hairy monster when you look that good playing basketball?
Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in his late 20s and his spirit in not backing down or retreating from public life whilst battling the condition mean that he continues to be an inspiration. Oscar-winning filmmaker, Davis Guggenheim has captured Fox’s life and career in an upcoming documentary for Apple TV+, called Still: A Michael J Fox Movie. The film releases on the platform on 12th May.
Fox has spoken about the importance of candour in the filmmaking process, stating that he wanted Guggenheim to make the film without his interference, stating “I was surprised, pretty early on, [the legal team] came to me and they said, ‘You can put in the contract that you have three things you can strike.’ And I said, ‘No! Just go shoot the movie. Make the movie,’” he explained. “It’s not a movie about me getting three things that you can’t say about me. It’s a movie about my life, and if we’re going to be real about it, let the filmmakers have access to that.”
