Warner Brosā marketing blitz for Barbie continues with a brand new trailer for the film landing.UPDATE: Hereās the very latest, full trailer for the filmā¦From April 2023ā¦.
Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie looks like it could be the most inspired use of a toy licence to emerge this year, and weāre fervently hoping that Gerwigās involvement makes this project more than just a cynical bit of brand synergising. With Little Women helmer Gerwig leading the project and Noah Baumbach on writing duties, we’re hoping for something a little on the subversive side.
The new trailer gives us a look at the filmās multiple Barbies and Kens, with The Hate U Give‘s Issa Rae and Assassination Nation‘s Hari Nef playing different versions of the enduringly-popular doll, whilst the MCU’s Shang-Chi, Simu Lu, and the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, are all set to appear.
Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling play the lead Barbie and Ken that find themselves journeying into the real world, presumably where their views and assumptions of life and of course, themselves will be tested. Barbie's tone will be key to whether this film can land on the artistically-credible side of a slick product tie-in and thatās pretty hard to judge from the trailer.
Of course, the first LEGO movie managed it, and the currently showing Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves seems to at least had a pretty good stab at it too. But with Gerwigās credentials, thereās high hopes that Barbie will be a worthwhile addition to Gerwigās highly-impressive filmography.
Warner Bros is certainly giving this project all of the marketing juice it has, releasing this not-quite teaser, not-quite full trailer to follow Decemberās teaser, as well as a whopping 24 character posters. Expect the marketing blitz to intensify as the filmās release draws closer.
The film is set to open on July 21st, 2023, meaning it will be going up against Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. You might call that genius counter-programming but weāre hoping it will be more like a dream double bill. Hereās that trailer below.
