A huge box office opening for John Wick: Chapter 4 has brought with Lionsgate trying to keep Keanu Reeves involved with the franchise going forward.
It was a weekend and a half for Lionsgate and the John Wick franchise, with the latest film in the series –
John Wick: Chapter 4 – earning $137m at the global box office in its first few days on release. It’s also enjoyed strong word of mind, and helped fund this year’s Lionsgate Christmas party.
Keanu Reeves had hinted that he was walking away from the series for the foreseeable future, with he and director Chad Stahelski said to be ‘done for the moment’. But Lionsgate movie boss Joe Drake is really rather keen to keep things going. As he’s declared to Deadline, “we’re not ready to say goodbye to Keanu with this franchise. It’s what alternative there will be”.
There’s already a spin-off movie called
Ballerina that’s been shot, so we know that the franchise is going to expand. The TV series
The Continental is also in post-production. But clearly, the studio is eyeing a future mainline fifth John Wick film on top of those.
Don’t expect it for a while if it happens, and it’s something that Reeves hasn’t entirely ruled out. For the minute though, expect
John Wick: Chapter 4 to enjoy a healthy month or two on the big screen…
