Yet another Star Wars film project may have hit the rocks, as Damon Lindelof hints that all is not well in a Galaxy Far, Far Away…
Only last month, reports surfaced to suggest that despite a three year hiatus from film production that has seen several projects come and go, only two
Star Wars films are currently in active development. Whilst we have no way of confirming how true those reports were, it was stated that Damon Lindelof’s planned film was in the best shape of the two, with the other project, a Taika Waititi movie, still unwritten at that point.
The Lindelof-scripted project is set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy who recently helmed a couple of episodes of Disney’s
Ms Marvel show
. We heard last October that this project had the most traction and some six months later, that still appeared to be the case.
Until now, at least.
Lindelof was recently chatting to
Slashfilm where he expressed an alarming amount of disinterest in getting to work on a
Star Wars film, declaring “I will just say, that for reasons that I can’t get into on this Sunday morning, on this day, the degree of difficulty is extremely, extremely, extremely high. If it can’t be great, it shouldn’t exist. That’s all I’ll say, because I have the same association with it as you do, which is, it’s the first movie I saw sitting in my dad’s lap, four years old, May of 77. I think it’s possible that sometimes when you hold something in such high reverence and esteem, you start to get in the kitchen and you just go ‘maybe I shouldn’t be cooking. Maybe I should just be eating.'”
“We’ll just leave it at that point”, he added.
That certainly doesn’t sound like sound like somebody who is enjoying their time on a project. What’s more, that degree of public dissatisfaction hints that Lindelof’s mind may already be made up. Sounds just a little Antonio Conte.
Rumours persist that next month’s Star Wars Celebration fan event in London will reveal the cinematic future of the series, but Lindelof’s comments cast that into some doubt. Bearing in mind that it was Lindelof who somehow found a way to adapt
Watchmen in a novel and gripping way, despite the comic book being considered an impossible adaptation, his exit from Lucasfilm would surely be a loss.
One way or another, we’ll find out officially what’s happening (or not happening) in just a couple of weeks at Star Wars Celebration.
