Nancy Meyers looks set to be working with some big names to accompany her next project’s reported $150m price tag.
Nancy Meyers is one of the leading names in romantic comedies having helmed a string of memorable films in the genre, including
Something’s Gotta Give and
The Holiday. Meyers isn’t the most prolific of directors having only directed six features in the last quarter century, but Netflix seem to be willing to put a lot of money on the table to ensure that it will be the home of her next film.
Currently titled
Paris Paramount, the project is attracting some star talent with Scarlett Johansson said to be in talks to take the lead role. The supporting cast being lined up isn’t half-bad either: Penelope Cruz, Owen Wilson, and Michael Fassbender are all said to be in the frame to feature alongside Johansson which will be quite the roll call, should things turn out that way.
So far, so good. But it’s the project’s reported budget which has raised a few eyebrows with the film said to be costing up to $150m. That’s quite the spend for a relationship comedy, even a starry one like this and harks back to the days when Netflix was simply showering directors with cash before things took a slightly more frugal turn. According to
The Hollywood Reporter, that figure isn’t nailed down though and negotiations are continuing.
The synopsis for the film certainly looks pretty fun: ‘The story reportedly follows a talented young writer/director who falls in love with a producer, with the pair ending up making several successful films before calling it quits romantically and professionally. The two are forced back together, however, when a great new project arises, and they find themselves teamed up again and having to deal with high stakes and volatile stars.’
Both the film itself and the wider project look rather interesting and we’ll update you with further news on this one as we hear it.
