In a coup for Warner Bros, the studio secures the exclusive services of M Night Shyamalan moving forwards.
M Night Shyamalan has ended his fruitful partnership with Universal, following a string of films that have rehabilitated his career. Instead the filmmaker will now ply his trade at Warner Bros, surely a coup for the studio following a rocky couple of years where several high-profile filmmakers chose to publicly disavow the company. Shyamalan and his Blinding Edge Pictures production company have signed a multi-year, first-look deal with Warner Bros, the first film in that deal being
Trap which is set to release in August of next year.
Shyamalan walks away from Universal on something of a roll. The recently released
Knock At The Cabin has scored good reviews and is comfortably in profit, whilst some of the other films in his recent filmography such as micro-budget,
The Visit and his shared universe team-up,
Glass, gave Universal very handsome returns on its end of the deal.
Universal’s loss is Warner Bros’ gain as the studio looks to rebuild a stable of renowned filmmakers. Through its New Line subsidiary, it already went all out to secure the services of
Barbarian's Zach Cregger whilst the studio’s DC superhero imprint has managed to fully lure James Gunn away from Marvel. It’s unknown as yet whether Shyamalan will continue to finance his own projects at Warner Bros but we’ll bring you more news on the deal, and on his next project,
Trap as we hear it.
