Smash hit Bob Dylan Broadway musical The Girl From North County is heading to the big screen, and here are the first details.
Bob Dylan has had an eclectic variety of big screen outings. There was the 1967 documentary Don’t Look Back, which followed his UK tour. 2003’s Masked And Anonymous saw Dylan make his screenwriting debut, also acting in the story of a singer who stages a comeback at a benefit concert. Possibly the most intriguing project was 2007 film I’m Not There, which saw seven iterations of Dylan’s personality portrayed by the likes of Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale and Heath Ledger.
Now, The Girl From The North Country, the hit Broadway musical written around his songs, is heading for the big screen.
Set during the Great Depression, the show follows a group of strangers who connect at a guesthouse. Things are quickly spiralling out of control for proprietor Nick Laine. His wife Elizabeth suffers from dementia and the bank is foreclosing on their home. Their adopted daughter, Marianne, has a closely guarded secret that no one can explain. When escaped convict Joe Scott seeks shelter at the guesthouse, a relationship develops between Marianne and Joe that changes everything.
The show incorporates 20 of Dylan’s best known hits, including Forever Young, All Along The Watchtower, Hurricane, Slow Train Coming, Make You Feel My Love and Like A Rolling Stone.
Woody Harrelson and Olivia Colman are set to star, alongside Chlöe Bailey and Tosin Cole.
Conor McPherson, who wrote the show, will direct and adapt the screenplay.
