Violent Night 2 could see Mrs Claus enter the fray, it has been revealed, as a sequel starts moving forward.
As counter-programming goes, the producers of Violent Night are probably pretty pleased with their decision to take on Avatar: The Way Of Water at the box office over the holidays. Whilst most distributors elected to give James Cameron’s blockbuster a wide berth, Universal released a Christmas-themed dark comedy action flick into the world and the gambit paid off.
Violent Night made around $75m at the global box office, tripling its budget. The film still has a home formats and PVOD release to add to that haul, whilst annual seasonal pickups by streamers will mean that the film is nicely in the profit margins for all involved.
As such, Violent Night's producers have already announced a follow-up, with director Tommy Wirkola confirming that he would be returning, stating “yes, we’re talking about it and we’re just making deals and getting everything in order.”
Wirkola spoke briefly about plans for the sequel, adding, “we have time to really crack the script and figure out the story. We have some ideas, me and Pat and Josh and the producers, we’ve been talking about where we want to take it and what we want to see. There’s stuff we left on the floor like the North Pole, Mrs Claus, the elves. But story-wise I think we have a really, really cool idea that expands on the world and scope, but still keeping that tone that we love from the first one.”
Violent Night felt like the closest we’ll ever come to getting a feature a version of The Night The Reindeer Died, that violent and gritty Santa action flick that Scrooged promised us all those years ago. Plus, we’re always up for more David Harbour, who will appear in PlayStation Productions’ Gran Turismo later this year. Violent Night 2 might take a while to come together but we’ll let you know more when we hear it.
