It’s taken years to get to this point, but TRON 3 finally has an actual production date, and filming is set for this year.
Ever since TRON: Legacy’s release in 2010, talks about another entry in the series have been ongoing. That film, which was directed by Top Gun: Maverick's Joseph Kosinski, had its share of fans, earning $400 at the global box office from a budget of around $170m. Disney was less convinced though, plus the company had lots of new toys to play with, following its acquisitions of Marvel then Lucasfilm.
As such, plans for a third film in the TRON series have remained in limbo until now.
12 years since TRON: Legacy's release, Disney has now confirmed that a third film is going into production. As has been long-rumoured, Jared Leto is involved and reports state that the studio is in early negotiations to hire Norwegian filmmaker Joachim Rønning to helm.
Rønning has previously directed a couple of splashy Disney blockbusters such as Maleficent: Mistress Of Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. He’s also working with the studio again on the upcoming Young Woman And The Sea.
It will be interesting to see how much enthusiasm remains for another entry in the TRON series, especially given the time that has passed and also with the news that Leto is attached to star. The actor’s turn in last year’s Morbius became the the centre point for an avalanche of derisory internet memes.
Another bone of contention for some TRON fans will be the likely absence of Daft Punk whose soundtrack to TRON: Legacy formed a significant aspect of the film’s appeal (not to mention their fun cameo). The French duo have now retired and were reportedly unhappy with Disney anyway, after the studio put out a remixed album of their soundtrack without their blessing.
Back in 2020, Disney claimed they were actively looking to get both Kosinski and Daft Punk involved in the sequel. Although this has yet to be confirmed, if the studio has failed on both fronts, then this project already feels somewhat compromised. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
