Liam Neeson is all set to play the revered fictional detective Philip Marlowe in this upcoming crime noir from director Neil Jordan.
Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe is a literary detective with real pedigree, hailing from a long line of hardboiled gumshoes to have caught the public imagination during the era of film noirs. The character has popped up in the movies since from time to time too, with luminaries like Bogart, Mitchum, Garner and Elliot Gould all portraying the private eye throughout the decades.
Now, Liam Neeson will be joining their distinguished ranks with the upcoming Marlowe, a noir crime thriller that is based on The Black-Eyed Blonde, a Philip Marlowe novel that is written by John Banville (and authorised by the Chandler estate).
A brief synopsis sounds typically noir: ‘Set in late 1930s Bay City, a down-on-his-luck Marlowe is hired to find the ex-lover of a glamorous heiress (Diane Kruger), daughter of a well-known movie star (Jessica Lange).’
Neil Jordan directs and there’s some promising talent studded throughout the project, including Danny Huston, Alan Cumming, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ian Hart, Colm Meaney, Daniela Melchior and Francois Arnaud and a script by The Departed's William Monahan.
