Despite enduring a turbulent year the Disney once again leads the studio pack with almost $5bn of box-office takings in 2022.
2022 was a year where Disney was never too far from the headlines and often for all the wrong reasons.
The company found itself embroiled in all kinds of bad press, much of which contributed to the return of former CEO, Bob Iger, back in November. He overnight replaced Bob Chapek, who paid the price for a series of perceived failings. Still, despite questions lingering into 2023 about the company’s future direction, Disney has once again proved to be the most successful American film studio in the last year, amassing almost $5bn globally throughout 2022 in cinemas.
This is the seventh year in a row that Disney have been the studio to top the earnings rankings and whilst the company’s share of the box office isn’t nearly as high as 2019 (when it gobbled up a huge 40% of US cinema takings), Disney still accounted for more than a quarter of all box office income.
With some big films set to launch in 2023, including
Indiana Jones And The Dial of Destiny, more Marvel films, a live action take on
The Little Mermaid and
Avatar: The Way Of Water continuing to bring in plenty of dollars, the company looks set to do pretty well in the next year. Whilst the company’s 20th Century Studios slate also brings in revenue too, it’s the big franchise movies largely engineered by Bob Iger that have secured Disney’s box office dominance these past seven years.
Iger faces plenty of challenges in his second stint in the Disney hot seat but at this point, maintaining the company’s box office dominance for an eighth year running seems pretty assured. Unless the next Paw Patrol movie goes nuclear or something, and lets Paramount leapfrog it…
