āA younger castā is likely for the next instalment of Pirates Of The Caribbean, whilst Margot Robbieās project may not be as ādeadā as reports suggested.
Itās been a couple of years since we heard that
two new Pirates of the Caribbean projects were being worked on, one of which would be a Margot Robbie-led project whilst the other would feature a host of younger characters. Neither seemed to feature a return for series regular, Johnny Depp.
Last month, Margot Robbie
spoke about her planned Pirates film, saying that it was effectively ādeadā, stating that “we had an idea, and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led – not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story – which we thought would’ve been really cool, but I guess they don’t want to do it.”
Whilst not confirming that itās officially curtains for that project, series producer Jerry Bruckheimer has popped up to offer an update to
The Hollywood Reporter on both
Pirates projects and it does sound like one is far closer to getting a green light than the other.
āOh God, they’re all hard. I think we’re getting very close on that one, too. We have a very good script. We developed two of them — the one with Margot Robbie and one with a younger cast. The Margot Robbie one needs a little more work. The younger cast one is close. Hopefully we’ll get both of them.ā
Bruckheimer did counter Robbieās assertion that her Pirates
project is ādeadā though, stating that āit’s alive for me. It’s alive for Disney. I’m sure she was disappointed it didn’t go first — or maybe not because she’s very busy, so it might be a blessing to push this a bit. We believe we’ll get it made. It’s a very strong story.ā
Bruckheimer also spoke about wanting to bring Johnny Depp back to the franchise, but pointed out that this was a decision that would be made by the studio. He did confirm that the Jack Sparrow character wouldnāt be killed off though.
There are plenty of intriguing narratives to follow here, but as it stands, it looks like weāll be getting the
Pirates Of The Caribbean project with a fresh young cast sailing into cinemas before Robbieās version, if indeed that one ever arrives at all.
