Bend It Like Beckham and Blinded by the Light director Gurinder Chadha has been talking about a few projects that are in the pipeline.
Gurinder Chadha has been at the Red Sea International Film Festival this week, presiding over a 20th anniversary screening of
Bend It Like Beckham and chatting about some upcoming projects.
Talking about her
newly announced Disney Princess project, the filmmaker said “it’s a very hard thing to do because there are certain rules you have to follow and you also don’t want to repeat yourself. I don’t want to make
Mulan again for example, I want to do my own thing. But at the same time there are very strong Disney princesses out there so to do something different but still within the genre, it’s an interesting balance to explore as a creator.”
Chadha also revealed that she is working on a āNetflix-backed project based on an Ancient Greek mythology characterā told from “a feminist perspective” and a “very funny” script that hails from Kevin Kwan, the writer of
Crazy Rich Asians. Chadhaās slate certainly sounds like itās pretty packed with the director juggling some high-profile projects.
Not content with all of those projects, Chadha spoke about wanting to travel to the festival in Jeddah to “see and meet Saudi women”. Challenging discrimination has always been a key element of her work, and Chadha stated that to that end, she was even developing the concept of a Saudi take on āBend It Like Beckham with local writers.”
You can read the whole piece over at
Deadline and itās full of interesting reveals and thoughts from a filmmaker whose work continues to delight and challenge. You can catch our own recent chat with Chadha at the London Podcast Festival
here. In there, she drops in another potential project or twoā¦
