Currently set for a late 2023 release, the follow-up to 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife has found its director.
It has been announced that Gil Kenan, director of
Monster House and last year’s
A Boy Called Christmas will be stepping into the director’s chair for Sony’s upcoming sequel to
Ghostbusters: Afterlife, the 2021 film that introduced a new generation of Ghostbusters to the world.
Kenan co-wrote the last film with Jason Reitman, with the latter directing. This time around, Reitman is set to produce and Kenan will direct although both have once again penned the project.
The last film grossed over $200m worldwide at the tail-end of 2021 when the the global pandemic was certainly something of a factor. With the next film looking to head back to a familiar New York setting, Sony will be hoping that the follow-up to
Afterlife can build on the previous film’s largely positive reception to create a real hit.
Speaking about stepping into the director’s chair, Kenan has said in a statement: “It’s an absolute honour to pick up the proton pack and step behind the camera for the next chapter of the Spengler family saga. I just wish I could go back to 1984 and tell the kid in the sixth row of the Mann Valley West that one day he was going to get to direct a
Ghostbusters film.”
Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon and the rest of the cast are expected to return and that slated December 2023 release date means that production will be starting imminently. We’ll bring you more on this one as we hear it.
