Sonyās minority stake in FromSoftware may yet lead to film versions of games like Dark Souls or Bloodborne.
Not content with the seemingly ceaseless stream of projects coming out of PlayStation Productions, the head of the Sony division responsible for adapting the companyās popular game titles into movies and TV projects has suggested that more may be on the way.
Hermen Hulst has suggested that Sonyās minority stake in FromSoftware, the popular development studio behind celebrated games such as
Dark Souls, Bloodborne and the recent
Elden Ring, could well lead to screen adaptations of these projects.
Hulst told
Reuters that “you should think of collaborations on the game development side first and foremost, but it’s also not unthinkable with our PlayStation Productions efforts that we explore opportunities.”
Given PlayStation Productionsā unprecedented push to develop game titles for the screen, weād suggest that itās ānot unthinkableā either. The last year or so has seen a head-spinning spate of projects announced by the studio, including the currently-shooting
Gran Turismo, a
Ghost Of Tsushima film, adaptations of
Gravity Rush, Days Gone and TV adaptations of the
Horizon franchise,
Twisted Metal, God of War, not to mention the already-completed take on
The Last Of Us and the certainty of a follow-up to this yearās
Uncharted.
With FromSoftwareās
Elden Ring shifting some 16 million copies this year, the developerās games possess the kind of popularity that will surely interest PlayStation Productions as it seeks to single-handedly flood the market with game-to-screen adaptations.
The push marks a wider strategy from Sony as it looks to create a more expansive PlayStation brand that can compete with its cash-rich competitors in the tech landscape. The two companies have a fruitful relationship that spans several years now so we wouldnāt be entirely surprised if we hear an announcement on this one sooner rather than later. Weāll let you know as this story continues to unfold.
