The team behind the reboot of Highlander are ācloser than theyāve ever beenā to officially announcing the film.
The long-gestating
Highlander reboot seems to be taking an age to get to the screen considering itās such an easy sell: a bunch of sword-wielding immortals battling through the ages to claim their destiny should be an attractive-enough concept to get anybody onside. Yet successive directors and movie stars have failed to get the project off the ground for well over ten years now.
Chad Stahelski – director of the
John Wick films – is set to helm the current iteration of the reboot, with
The Witcher's Henry Cavill set to star. However, Stahelskiās schedule is pretty stacked with
John Wick 4 and a live-action adaptation of the PlayStation game,
Ghost Of Tsushima in the works, which he also plans to direct himself.
That said, the filmmaker surfaced a few weeks ago to offer a brief update on the
Highlander project, promising fans who might be getting a bit worried that ‘it is still happening’. Now, Stahelski has offered a slightly more detailed nugget of information, saying that the planned film is very close to taking off.
“Weāre in the process of tweaking right now. I think we know what we want. More importantly than anything, we know what we want to make. Itās in the creatives. We know what weāre trying to make. Itās just a matter of getting it to the point where we feel āokay, this is it. Letās goā. But weāre closer than weāve ever been, so thatās good.”
The 1986 original is a divisive film with some dubbing it as a cult classic whereas others may feel differently. Either way, the sagaās premise is a strong one and if Stahelski can bring those
John Wick sensibilities to the table alongside Henry Cavillās physical prowess, it could be a barnburner of a film.
For those
Highlander fans whoāve waited patiently for many years now, Stahelskiās words may be comforting but until the film is officially announced, they wonāt be taking anything for granted.
