Joaquin Phoenix will be returning for Joker 2 in 2024, itās been confirmed by Warner Bros ā it wonāt cancel this one, either.
2019’s
Joker was a box-office behemoth, grossing over $1bn from a production budget of just $70m. Naturally, despite the film telling a complete standalone story, those kinds of numbers mean talk of a follow-up will never go away and it proved to be thus with the announcement back in June that a
Joker sequel would be happening.
Still, given the artistic credentials of star, Joaquin Phoenix, nobody was expecting this to be a simple ārinse and repeatā formula. Reports of the film being a musical suggest that whatever
Joker: Folie à Deux turns out to be, thereās some creatively risky thinking going on and we like it. That title,
Joker: Folie à Deux has lots of people wondering if the reference to ‘deux’ meant that Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck would be uniting onscreen with his Harley Quinn, his love interest from the comics and previous films. That indeed does seem to be the plan for sequel and last we heard, none other than Lady Gaga is in early talks to play the beloved antagonist.
Shooting for the project is set to take place in December with rumours suggesting that much of the film will take place in Arkham Asylum.
As for that release date?
Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros has set an October 4th, 2024 date for the film, meaning that the film will release on the exact same day and month as its predecessor did back in 2019. With the sequel, it looks like Philips and his collaborators are making some bold creative choices yet again and interest in this one is sure to be very high indeed. We’ll let you know more as we hear it.
